Open and click tracking and reports
What every campaign metric means, how opens and clicks are tracked, and why open rates are only an estimate since Apple Mail Privacy Protection.
InboxRoads tracks each campaign as it sends. You can see results for a single campaign or for your whole account.
How tracking works
You control tracking in step 4 · Tracking of each campaign:
- Track opens adds an invisible 1×1 image. An open is recorded when the image loads.
- Track clicks sends links through your tracking domain so each click is recorded before the reader is redirected.
Using your own custom tracking domain keeps those links on your brand.
Campaign metrics
Open a campaign from Campaigns to see:
| Metric | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Recipients | Contacts in the audience after exclusions, plus the credits used |
| Sent | Emails accepted by the sending service. Skipped emails are noted separately. |
| Delivered | Emails the receiving server confirmed. Only reported by providers that send delivery events. |
| Opened | Unique opens ÷ sent |
| Clicked | Unique clicks ÷ sent |
| Bounced | Bounces ÷ sent |
| Unsubscribed | Unsubscribes ÷ sent |
| Complaints | Spam reports ÷ sent |
The page also shows an Engagement timeline of opens and clicks per hour, and Top links by clicks. Click Recipient log to see each recipient's status. You can filter by Sent, Delivered, Bounced, Failed, Skipped, Pending, Opened or Clicked.
Unique means each person counts once, however many times they open or click. A click also counts as an open, because some readers block images.
Account-wide reports
Go to Reports in the sidebar and choose 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. You'll see:
- totals for Emails sent, Open rate, Click rate and Bounce rate
- a Credit usage chart
- a table of campaigns sent in that period
A caveat about open rates
Since Apple Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) arrived, Apple Mail can load images in advance for users who turned it on, whether or not the person reads the email. Those emails can show as opened even if nobody looked at them. Some other clients block images, which hides real opens.
So treat open rate as a rough trend, not an exact count. Clicks, replies and conversions are more reliable signs of engagement.
Keep an eye on bounces and complaints
A rising bounce rate usually means an old or unverified list. Campaigns are paused automatically if bounce or complaint rates go above the platform's limits. See hard bounce vs soft bounce and how to improve email deliverability.
Key takeaways
- Opens use a tracking image. Clicks use redirected links.
- Treat open rates as a trend because of Apple MPP. Clicks are more reliable.
- Use Reports for account-wide results over 7, 30 or 90 days.
