Suppression list and unsubscribes

How unsubscribes, hard bounces and complaints are suppressed automatically, and how to add or remove addresses yourself.

Your suppression list holds addresses that your campaigns never email, even if they're still in one of your lists. It protects the people who opted out and your sender reputation.

How addresses get suppressed

InboxRoads adds addresses automatically in these cases:

Reason When
Unsubscribe The recipient clicked the unsubscribe link, or used their mailbox's one-click unsubscribe
Hard bounce The address permanently failed
Complaint The recipient marked your email as spam
Blocked The receiving server blocked the message
Manual You added the address yourself

The matching contact's status also changes to Unsubscribed, Bounced or Complained, so you can see it on the Contacts page.

Soft bounces (temporary problems like a full mailbox) aren't suppressed. Learn the difference in hard bounce vs soft bounce.

How unsubscribing works

Every campaign includes an unsubscribe link in the footer, next to your business address. Each message also carries List-Unsubscribe headers, including RFC 8058 one-click unsubscribe, so Gmail, Yahoo and other mailbox providers can show their own unsubscribe button.

When a recipient clicks the link in the email, they see a confirmation page and click Unsubscribe. This extra step stops link-scanning security tools from unsubscribing people by accident. Unsubscribes are counted in each campaign's report.

View and search the list

Go to Suppression in the sidebar. You can search by email and filter by Reason.

Add addresses manually

Use this for people who asked to be removed by reply or phone, or for addresses you never want to email.

  1. Go to Suppression.
  2. In Add addresses, paste addresses separated by new lines or commas.
  3. Click Suppress.

Remove an address

Click Remove next to an entry with the reason Unsubscribe, Blocked or Manual. Only do this if the person has given fresh consent to hear from you.

Hard bounces and complaints can't be removed by you. If one of those addresses should get email again, contact support.

Tip: Re-importing a contact doesn't re-subscribe them. Imports never change subscription status. See import contacts from CSV.

Key takeaways

  • Unsubscribes, hard bounces and complaints are suppressed automatically.
  • Suppressed addresses are left out of every campaign and don't use credits.
  • Only remove an address when the person has opted back in.
